August is the month where Helleborus get their chance to stand out from the rest of the plants in the landscape and become a stand out feature of the garden. Best planted as a sub canopy shade ground cover this plant can be used for mass planting, dotted around garden beds or even as a low edging plant. I find they are one of those plants that when used in the right contexts, can be utilized in many styles of landscape, as long as they are planted in the correct conditions. As well as being a stand out flowering plant they also complement many of the flowering trees in the Magnolia family, with the correct colour choice they are perfect as an under planting to most Magnolias.
